Pyrography “Fire Writing” is an ancient art form that dates back through the centuries to Roman and Greek cultures and is found throughout the world. It has been a decorative art form used on many surfaces, most commonly wood and leather. The art has grown and developed in the types of tools used. Where once heated irons were the source of the burn, now electric is used to heat pens with wired and sculpted tips. Kathy started with various types of wood like pine, poplar, and maple and the choice of wood depends on the subject. Poplar is best for portraits because of its broad grain and light surface, while maple and pine allow for a darker application. Watercolor paper is a “wood” alternative. Thick watercolor paper provides a great surface for burning delicate designs. Coloration can be used to enhance the design and Kathy incorporates the use of acrylic paint, colored pencils and watercolors.
