In the Workshop

Kathy Bohn’s workshop – wood burning table and tools – carving and cleaning of gourds – planing and carving of wood

You hear the hum of the vacuum, the low buzz of the micro-jigsaw, the higher whine of the Dremel, and the shush shush of the sandpaper.

Boxes hold sandpaper, gourds, wood pieces. Tables and cabinets hold tools – drills-jigsaws-sanders-dust masks-earplugs.

Painting Gourds

After the gourd’s design is burnt into the skin, Kathy uses ink dyes and acrylic paint to create the colors of the design. Using microbrushes, she carefully selects a palette of colors, considering the color of the gourd skin. Each gourd has a unique color and patterns it develops during growth and these are factored into the design. Sometimes they are the design!
